About GPS House Concerts

I truly believe that house concerts originated from the Maritime Kitchen Parties. Both house concerts and kitchen parties are held in someone's home. You gather your dearest friends together. You socialize and partake of refreshments and share the love of music and song. But in the Maritimes, this tradition has been on going for hundreds of years.

GPS House Concerts got its start in October 2007 in Millet, Alberta at the urging of my friends Bruce and Julie.  They had been holding these shows in their home for several years. When it was time for them to relocate to the west coast they had a desire to have the concerts continue after their departure from Alberta. So with encouragement and support from Bruce and Julie and the assistance of  Laura Girvan, Shannon Perry and Carl Smith, GPS House Concerts was born.

The first concert featured Canadian Country Music Award winner Sean Hogan. Over the next sixteen months GPS House Concerts attracted award winning artists from across Canada.  Maritime artists Cynthia MacLeod and Gordie Belcher, West Coast artist and one of Canada's most awarded singer/songwriters, Mr. Gary Fjellgaard, Prairie artists and Central Canadian Artists.  That list included multiple CCMA award winners Deric Ruttan and Craig Young, East Coast Music and Music Nova Scotia award winner Dave Gunnng and Alberta's own, Tracy Millar.

In January 2009 GPS House Concerts bid farewell to Alberta with a concert featuring multiple CCMA nominee Samantha King. I was trilled that Samantha had my son Jordan play guitar on several numbers.  The show had a guest appearance by the artist who opened the series for us in 2007, Mr. Sean Hogan. That show ended with the artists and the audience serenading my daughter Shannon and I, with the Roy Rodgers classic, "Happy Trails to You".  What a great send off to our relocation home to Nova Scotia.

In October 2010, after living out of suitcases for ten months and with ongoing renovations to our East Coast Home, GPS House Concerts launched its first show here in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. That show was held on Thanksgiving Day and featured Alberta Cowboy Singer, Tim Hus. Tim had just completed a cross country tour opening for Stompin Tom.  On Valentine's weekend 2011, we were pleased to host Mr. Dave Gunning. On Mother's Day, Dave Carroll was our featured artist and on July 10th, 2011 my dear friend, RyLee Madison honoured my guests and I with a great afternoon performance.

So, we now have a history of hosting Concerts and a desire to carry on the tradition of Kitchen Parties or House Concerts. I hope we can welcome you into our front room to visit with some of the greatest talents in the world, the Canadian Singer/songwriters.
